The Story
The Mountains of the Moon, as Ptolemy described them, have long held a place in the minds of explorers.
Situated on the Uganda/DRC border the Rwenzori mountain range are an expanse of alpine peaks, snowcapped and mist shrouded all year round.
In 1906 the Italian Duke of Abruzzi led an expedition to the mountains and took a series of photographs of the glaciers at the summits. That was unwittingly a baseline data point for many future scientific studies as subsequent trips have shown the glaciers to be receeding at an alarming rate from the level which the Duke witnessed.
Due to the impact of climate change, the levels at which glaciers are viable will soon rise above the height of the tallest peaks.
